Leading Hungarian jazz group, the Mihály Dresch Quartet make a rare appearance in London
For decades, the Mihály Dresch Quartet has been consistently and confidently pursuing its own path with an individual blend of Hungarian folk music and Afro-American jazz. Mihály Dresch is an outstanding representative of Hungarian jazz music, an excellent saxophone player with a unique music world based on Hungarian folk music and jazz.
In his first quartet as leader, founded in 1984, the legacy of John Coltrane's music can be recognised as one of the main sources of inspiration. The recent lineup (István Baló - drums, Ferenc Kovács - violin, Miklós Lukács - dulcimer, Mátyás Szandai - double bass) has existed since 1998. Dresch has performed at jazz festivals worldwide, including the London Jazz Festival (2003), Jazz & Wine Festival in Italy, the Festival Jazzcb in France, the Kalisz Festival in Poland, the Jazz Brugge Festival in Belgium, the London Jazz the JazzFest Wien, and in the New Morning Club in Paris.
Throughout his career Mihály Dresch’s performed and recorded albums with such famous artists as John Tchicai, Archie Shepp Hungarian Bebop (Budapest, 2002), Chris Potter - Zea (2014), Roscoe Mitchell, Chico Freeman, Lee Konitz, David Murray and Dewey Redman. Although Dresch has developed a totally unique world of music, he’s never seceded from mainstream jazz and still plays one or two eternal classics on his latest albums as well.
Miklós Lukács cimbalom player, one of the quartet members, has played at the EFG London Jazz Festival two times earlier. Last time as a partner of the Spiritual jazz saxophone legend, Charles Lloyd, at the 2014 edition of the festival.
