Stride piano takes us back to the golden years of jazz, between Storyville and Harlem, more or less a century ago.
Stride piano takes us back to the golden years of jazz, between Storyville and Harlem, more or less a century ago. Closely related to blues, ragtime and swing, stride cannot fail to fascinate even today with that rocky left hand that carves bass lines, the overwhelming rhythm, and the forays on the keyboard of authentic virtuosos such as Willie The Lion Smith, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and many others.
The exceptional 26 year old Mathis Picard is a French-Malagasy pianist, composer, producer and bandleader who lives in New York. His work includes leading the Mathis Sound Orchestra, which released its debut album “World Unity” in 2020, regular trio performances, and solo appearances (his album “Live At The Museum” has just been released). Aside from being a bandleader, Mathis has performed with artists such as Ron Carter, Lee Ritenour, Jason Moran, Wynton Marsalis, and Mwenso & The Shakes.
