Basque jazz singer Bea Asurmendi closes the EFG London Jazz Festival at Morocco Bound
Bea Asurmendi will be presenting an evocative collection of original compositions (in English, Basque and Spanish) where contemporary jazz and both Basque and Spanish folk sounds meet. Bea’s unmistakably personal voice and powerful lyrics unveil a unique and fearless expression of vulnerability over a soundscape that invites the listener to reflect upon grief, forgiveness, family, self-love, sisterhood and the importance of mental health awareness.
Originally from a little village in the mountains of the Basque Country, Bea packed her bags and moved to London a few years ago with the dream of pursuing her passion for music in one of Europe’s great melting pots of musical cultures. Here, she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Popular Music Performance and a Master's in Jazz Singing at Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
Across the UK, she has performed on world-class stages including Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Pizza Express Jazz Club and 606 Club. In 2023 she was selected to present her music at EFG London Jazz Festival and open for Ari Hoenig's concert at Milton Court Concert Hall. She will also be playing this year’s High Tide Festival in London. Besides, she has played international festivals such as Atlantikaldia and Musika Parkean in Spain. In addition, Bea has accompanied her sister Idoia Asurmendi on her tour across Spain which included well-known theatres and festivals such as Lara Theatre in Madrid, Donostia Festival and Victoria Eugenia Theatre. She has also performed as a guest artist with Judit Neddermann and Femina on their Spanish tours. Bea very often collaborates with international composer Fernando Velázquez taking part in film and theatre soundtracks.
