Master conga player Williams Cumberbache brings Canalside Sessions to EFG London Jazz Festival, joined by special guest musicians for an afternoon of live jazz, Latin, Brazilian and African sounds in Grow’s hidden garden terrace beside the River Lea.
Canalside Sessions brings an afternoon of live music to Grow Hackney for EFG London Jazz Festival, led by master conga player Williams Cumberbache alongside a special guest band to be announced.
A long-term Grow collaborator with more than 30 years in the UK music scene, Williams has performed and collaborated with artists including Goldie and Björk. He is also the leader of eight-piece band Tumbaito and a musician with a deep connection to jazz, Latin, Brazilian and African music.
At Canalside Sessions, Williams brings that experience together with musicians from across London’s jazz and global music communities. Each session takes a different shape depending on who joins him, moving through jazz fusion, Latin grooves, Brazilian and African sounds, with rhythm and improvisation running through the afternoon.
The setting is a big part of it. Grow sits right on the River Lea in Hackney Wick, surrounded by artist studios and the area's old warehouses. Canalside Sessions takes place on our hidden garden terrace, with the musicians playing live from the floating pontoon stage as boats pass along the water. It’s intimate and informal, with people eating, drinking, listening, chatting and, when the music calls for it, getting up to dance.
For this special EFG London Jazz Festival edition, Williams will be joined by a guest band selected especially for the session, to be announced closer to the date.
