Jazz collective Way Out West plays new arrangements of music from the Sonny Rollins record 'Way Out West'.

Way Out West is a multi-generational collective of jazz musician/composers from West London which was founded in 2004 to present adventurous music across the jazz spectrum.
It takes its name from the LP made by Sonny Rollins in 1957. Sonny is now 93 – 92 at time of writing – and no longer able to play the tenor saxophone, but remains a musical and spiritual guru to generations of musicians.
This is the first time we have explored the music from the iconic recording 'Way Out West' by Rollins and we'll be featuring groups from duo to octet to present the work in a new light.
The tunes on 'Way Out West' are a mix of the romantic, the swinging, two Rollins tunes, and two typically quirky choices: Wagon Wheels and I’m An Old Cowhand. This evening we'll showcase the contrasting styles of the collective's own saxophone players Pete Hurt, Tony Woods and Chris Biscoe
Way Out West was one of four recordings made by Sonny Rollins in 1956/57/58 which established him as one of the most important tenor players of his generation. The first, Saxophone Colossus, was the breakthrough record. Way Out West, A Night at the Village Vanguard, and Freedom Suite, all recorded with a trio of saxophone, bass and drums effectively created this format for jazz, and demonstrated Sonny’s musical range. Tonight the musicians will also play tunes from the other three recordings.
Musicians include Pete Hurt, Tony Woods, Chris Biscoe, Kate Williams, Nette Robinson, Tom Millar and Nick Mills. For biographical details see our website www.wowjazz.org
