Tune-Yards, the music project of Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner, is known for its vibrant fusion of indie pop, Afrobeat and experimental loops.

Emerging with the 2009 album BiRd-BrAiNs, recorded on a handheld recorder, Tune-Yards gained widespread acclaim with w h o k i l l (2011), which featured the breakout hit "Bizness" and won the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll.

Tune Yards' music is characterized by layered vocals, polyrhythmic beats, and socially conscious lyrics, tackling themes of race, privilege, and politics. Albums like Nikki Nack (2014) and I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life (2018) further solidified their reputation for pushing sonic and lyrical boundaries. The 2021 album sketchy marked a return to raw, energetic songwriting.

Distraction, depression, and heartbreak reign supreme in 2025. “Making art in this day and age for me is a battle for focus; we’re in an age of interruption,” says Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards on sixth album Better Dreaming. Proudly waving an anti-fascist, liberation, freak flag, Better Dreaming contains some of Tune-Yards smoothest, funkiest, and most direct pop music to date, and yes, you can dance to it. Recorded as a duo, all but one of these songs are built around Merrill’s drum looping and rhythm building, as they were on some of their early albums like Bird-Brains and W H O K I L L.

Expect an evening of high-energy live performance and innovative production from Tune-Yards.
