Acclaimed drummer, composer, educator, and Tomorrow's Warriors alumna, Romarna Campbell joins the Tomorrow's Warriors Big Band to premiere her new composition, Bloom, for this special EFG London Jazz Festival concert at The Albany.

Romarna's musical storytelling begins with the drums. The Nomadic spirit of this exciting drummer and producer lives in her jazz and hiphop infused music. Her irrepressible energy can be heard on Inherently Political, a super-charged sonic assault on racism that immediately won favor with Jazz FM's Tony Minvielle and had her crowned by BBC Radio 6 Music's Jamz Supernova as New Name of the Week.
Having honed her craft with Berklee College of Music, Tomorrow's Warriors and the Notebenders, Romarna stands on the shoulders of giants and is drawing inspiration from this view as she beats a path forward that is very much her own. Written for Tomorrow's Warriors Big Band, Bloom is an 8-part suite exploring life, freedom, growth and fragility through the metaphor of a flower. It moves from chaos to stillness - always shifting, never static. Romarna deconstructs the traditional big band confines, introducing textures layered with electronics and samples, and features two drum kits, including Romarna herself performing on the night. Expect a mix of raw groove, texture and emotional weight - with nods to Maria Schneider, Moses Sumner, Mingus, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Brittany Howard and more.
The Tomorrow's Warriors Big Band development ensemble features 16 young musicians aged 14-25 years old and is mentored by TW alumnus Axel Kane-Lidstrom. Axel has performed and recorded with Cykada, Maisha, and sax legend Gary Bartz, he is also founder and musical director of the sonic melting pot that is Levitation Orchestra.
For over 30 years, TW has played a vital role within its community and the wider music industry and has been credited with literally changing the face of UK jazz. Free Access to their artistic program has proved crucial in nurturing the talent and early careers of so many of the most exciting UK artists currently tearing up the international jazz scene including Ezra Collective, Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Jason Yarde, Soweto Kinch... the list goes on.
