Tina Edwards brings Love Is Everywhere back to Grow Hackney for EFG London Jazz Festival, joined by one of the most important figures in the history of UK jazz dance, Paul Murphy.
Love Is Everywhere is Tina’s celebration of jazz as dancefloor music. A DJ, broadcaster, music journalist and curator, she has built a reputation for sets that dig well beyond the obvious, moving through jazz, Latin rhythms, Afro-diasporic grooves, offbeat disco and records picked up on her travels. The party has become a meeting point for jazz dancers and music heads, with dancers travelling from across Europe and Asia to take part.
For this edition, Tina welcomes Paul Murphy, whose influence on British jazz dance stretches back to the late 1970s. His sets at London clubs including the Electric Ballroom, The Wag and The Horseshoe helped shape a faster, harder approach to jazz on the dancefloor, bringing together bebop, fusion, Latin jazz and jazz-funk. His selections became hugely influential on the generation that followed, with Gilles Peterson once saying that Murphy “found almost every jazz dance classic”.
That digging continues today through Jazz Room Records, the label Murphy founded to reissue rare and overlooked jazz while releasing new music built with the dancefloor in mind.
Love Is Everywhere brings Tina and Paul together across two generations of the same culture: DJs searching for jazz that moves, dancers responding to it and a dancefloor where the music isn't treated as something to stand back and admire.
