Find Your World traces Vimala Rowe’s journey through diverse cultures, music and personal experiences. It blends jazz, blues, African and Indian traditions, UK indie, and soul.
From her training in Hindustani classical music in India, to world music, soul and effortlessly swinging jazz, award-winning singer Vimala Rowe has rapidly become recognised as a major talent on the British jazz scene. Sell-out performances at Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club-Soho, 606 Club, London Jazz Festival and countrywide, she delights and enchants her audiences with her naturally passionate and emotive range of expression.
Her phenomenal accolades include a highly successful duo with guitar legend John Etheridge, culminating in an acclaimed eclectic album of their own work, including jazz and world inspirations. ‘Sweeping musical horizons’, The Guardian. Further work includes writing and performing with flamenco guitar legend Paco Peña at Sadler's Wells.
That's what Vimala says about her new album: Find Your World traces the journey through a life shaped by multiple “mothers” before being adopted by white academic parents. The music, poetry, and voices that carried me through both joyful and turbulent moments are woven throughout the project of original music. Influences from Billie Holiday to William Blake form its emotional and artistic backbone.
Running through her original music is a golden thread of Jazz, Blues, African and Indian folk traditions, UK Indie and Soul. It carries the imprint of nine years spent living in Bangkok, where I became part of Thailand’s first rap band, followed by a year in Maharashtra, immersed in the study of North Indian classical music.
When I returned to England, I entered a period of reflection and retreat. In time, I re-emerged into the UK jazz scene, bringing these many strands of experience, sound and self with me.
Find Your World is a reflective tapestry: first finding the world within yourself, then finding the right people to share it with. Through this album, we, as a band, wish to elevate and inspire collectively.
