Hackney Wick’s long-running Thursday Jazz Jam sees Stratos, led by Mercury Prize-nominated bassist Rio Kai, open with a live set before welcoming guest musicians to the stage for an unpredictable open jam, celebrating over a decade of weekly sessions at Grow.
A fixture at Grow, Hackney since 2016, our weekly Thursday Jazz Jam has spent more than a decade bringing musicians and audiences together for live jazz, improvisation and open sessions in Hackney Wick.
At the centre of the night is Stratos, led by Mercury Prize-nominated bassist Rio Kai alongside Dom Pusey on saxophone, Mike De Souza on guitar and Zoe Pascal on drums. Drawing from jazz standards and their own compositions, the quartet open the night before throwing the session open to guest musicians.
That’s when things become less predictable. Regular players share the stage with musicians joining for the first time, line-ups change from tune to tune and the music follows wherever the players take it. Over the years, the jam has become a meeting point for players from across London’s jazz community, while remaining just as much a night for anyone who wants to come down and listen.
In June 2026, we celebrated ten years of the residency: a decade of Thursday nights, countless guest players and a lot of improvisation. For EFG London Jazz Festival, Stratos bring that same weekly session to the festival, with the band, guest musicians and audience packed together inside Grow.
