Autumn 2021 marks the 60th anniversary of British jazz legend Tubby Hayes’ ground-breaking debut in New York, an appearance that paved the way for a stream of US jazz giants to visit Ronnie Scott’s in the years ahead.
Arguably the legendary figure of post-war British jazz, and an integral part of the story of Ronnie’s, Hayes died tragically in 1973, but has left a rich legacy of recordings, compositions and arrangements which continue to inspire.
None has been more inspired by Hayes than Simon Spillett, multi-award-winning tenor saxophonist (BBC Jazz Awards, British Jazz Awards) who together with his quartet, featuring pianist fellow British jazz heavyweights Rob Barron, bassist Alec Dankworth and drummer Pete Cater, has put together this celebration of the genius of Tubby, featuring compositions from 1961’s Hayes ‘Tubbs in N.Y.’ album, alongside other famous Hayes’ themes and arrangements.
