Shane Forbes Explores Blossom Dearie

Shane Forbes Explores Blossom Dearie

Tue 16 Nov 2021

Best known for his work with Internationally acclaimed quartet/collective ‘Empirical’ the multi-Award-winning drummer Shane Forbes presents his unique show “Exploring Blossom Dearie”, featuring Ruben Fox-sax.

Winner of the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ ‘Young Musician of the Year’ award in 2009 along with MOBO and Parliamentary Jazz Awards as a member of the internationally acclaimed quartet ‘Empirical’ (which he co-founded and co-leads), drummer Shane Forbes is without question one of the most in demand musicians on the UK jazz scene.

With a hugely impressive cv that includes regular appearances with the likes of Tomorrow’s Warriors, Jean Toussaint, Billy Jenkins, Claire Martin, Robert Mitchell and Soweto Kinch, his particularly impressive textural expressiveness and musical freedom have been the trademark of his sound in the countless projects he’s been a part of, both in the UK and Worldwide. Tonight, for his gig at the 606 Club, Shane will be joined by a dream team of long-time friends and some of London’s finest musicians, handpicked for this special gig: Ruben Fox-saxophone, Joe Webb-piano, Artie Zaitz-guitar and Tom Farmer-bass. Shane describes the music that they will perform this evening as “an exploration and adaptation of the tender, yet forcefully swinging style of the legendary jazz vocalist, Blossom Dearie”.

This unique gig (they’ve only performed this repertoire once before years ago), promises to be something quite special. Booking advised!

“Forbes…energy…was contagious and…passion, creativity and concentration on stage were a joy to watch and to experience” - London Jazz News;

“Forbes…was a performance of searing intensity that left both the band and their online audience gasping for breath” - The Jazz Mann

“One of our most exciting drummers, Shane Forbes has been a member of the award-winning band Empirical since it was formed in 2007. Here he’s assembled a cutting-edge band of his own including saxophonist Ruben Fox, guitarist Artie Zaitz, Joe Webb piano and fellow Empirical bandmember Tom Farmer on bass. They’ll be exploring the music of one of the most whimsical performers in jazz, the delightfully witty and original singer and pianist Blossom Dearie. Get set for a very interesting and fun evening! “
