Sam Leak Presents: Jason Brown feat. Nicole Glover

Sam Leak Presents: Jason Brown feat. Nicole Glover

Sun 21 Nov 2021

NYC drummer Jason Brown (Joey DeFrancesco, Cedar Walton) fronts his award-winning cohort featuring revered pianist Orrin Evans (The Bad Plus), alongside UK Jazz stars Rachael Cohen (saxophone), and Rio Kai (double bass).

Jason Brown plays the music, not the genre. Warm reflexes and meditative command position the drummer, composer and two time GRAMMY nominee as both a leader and a highly sought collaborator.

The loose, elastic quarter note and earthbound pulse intrinsic to Brown’s signature sound have garnered him critical praise and peer acknowledgment over the past 20 years, prompting creative associations with Joey DeFrancesco, Carmen Lundy, Orrin Evans, Ryan Kisor, George Mraz, Cedar Walton, and Monty Alexander, among many other distinctive voices. From the Jazz Philharmonic in Saint Petersburg, Russia to Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, Brown’s live performances preserve a tradition of jazz music by honoring the past while remaining bonded to the present.

Dubbed by the iconic Billy Hart as the “best student he’s ever seen,” Brown has performed across the world but remains a New York artist through and through. The Bronx native was born at Lenox Hill Hospital, and has lived and regularly performed on both US coasts, always returning to the city of opportunity and artistic innovation. International venues where Brown has transformed the bandstand into a vessel for spontaneity include Ronnie Scott’s in London, Porgy and Bess in Vienna, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Montematre in Copenhagen, The Blue Note in Tokyo and Fasching in Stockholm. He has performed at such distinctive festivals as the London Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazzfest and countless others.

His award-winning cohort, featuring revered Nicole Glover, will explore originals and the elastic style cultivated by Evans in such groups as the Bad Plus, Tarbaby and Captain Black Big Band, as well as refreshing takes on the Great American Songbook. The concert is part of Brown's new and highly celebrated guest artist series at Olivers Jazz Bar.
