They present new music and poetry alongside music from Mitchell’s brilliant album entitled A Vigil For Justice. A Vigil For Peace (2017) as well as the release that followed it in 2018, the EP Epiphany (both received widespread critical recognition).
The music, interspersed with Robert Mitchell's poetry and spoken word, is a vivid commentary on the current times. It seamlessly goes from m-base, funk, Latin to free, always keeping the listener on their toes and fascinated. The changes of the rhythm, also present in the inspiration coming from the beat poets and hip-hop, take us on the path of discovery, with the melody always there, exciting and flowing.
You will also hear music from the Jazz South commissioned piece Good Trouble, Necessary Trouble, combining music and poetry in a tribute to the legendary American politician, congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis.?
Robert Mitchell is proud to have been a Steinway artist for over a decade. He has released 14 albums and 3 collections of poetry. He also leads the bands TRUE THINK and improv trio The Flame. He was MD on the successful BBC4 television programme 'Jazz 625 Live: For One Night Only’ which won the British Broadcasting Award. He has played with Billy Harper, Greg Osby, Courtney Pine CBE, Alicia Olatuja, Orphy Robinson, Steve Coleman, Phil Ranelin, Omar Puente, Ernesto Simpson, Daymé Arocena, Jason Rebello, Shirley Smart, Basement Jaxx, Dub Colossus, Daniel Casimir, Joshua Redman, Jacqui Dankworth MBE, and many others.
