The London-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader melds jazz, classical, dub and R&B into sweeping, adventurous music to stir the senses.
Nubya Garcia grew up studying under the noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. Her eclectic music style comes from a place of exploration and self-study, of wanting to experiment across all disciplines.
Garcia’s most recent album, Odyssey, is a majestic feat blending orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz, broken beat and dub, resulting in a grand, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove. Her debut album, Source, was released to huge critical acclaim, including an NPR Tiny Desk (home) concert, a Pitchfork ‘Best New Music’ review and a Rolling Stone ‘Album of the Month’ mention, as well as being nominated for the Mercury Prize, a prestigious award given to the best albums from the UK or Ireland.
Equally at home nestling up against modern titans on the Mercury Prize shortlist and classical music greats at the BBC Proms, Nubya Garcia makes – in the words of the one and only Iggy Pop – “fantastically advanced music that tugs at the heartstrings”.
