An exciting and outstanding big band led by Tony Woods and Nette Robinson, playing original songs and sweet airs, with global influences. The NTJO presents reworkings of Tony's compositions, originally written for his band the Tony Woods Project, as well as vocal settings of poetry arranged by both Tony Woods and Nette Robinson.
Born in Southampton, Tony Woods grew up in Chilworth Old Village and began playing folk music with his father at the age of five. A graduate of Keele University, Leeds College of Music and The Guildhall School of Music Tony received awards for saxophone, outstanding performance and the soloist’s prize at the Dunkirk International Jazz Festival.
In the mid 90’s, Tony Woods Project was formed. It has recorded four highly acclaimed albums of original, global inspired compositions and has attracted airplay on BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM, UK Jazz Radio, touring extensively and performing at festivals across the UK.
In 2008 Tony married the singer and arranger Nette Robinson and in 2010 Nette’s Little Big Band released its debut CD “The Little Big Band Plays.” Around this time Nette and Tony both worked with the late Michael Garrick and are featured on his last few albums.
As a special birthday gift to her husband Nette started arranging Tony’s tunes for jazz orchestra and thus the NTJO -The Nette and Tony Jazz Orchestra - was formed in 2012. Tony also took on the arranger’s mantle and now both wife and husband have contributed to the band's extensive repertoire. With an emphasis on big tunes, uplifting ensembles and inspiring solos the NTJO always brings a celebratory atmosphere to it's concerts.
