Kenny Barron Trio

Kenny Barron Trio
Fri 15 Nov 2024

Kenny Barron, a six-time winner of the Best Pianist award by the Jazz Journalists Association, is globally acknowledged as a virtuoso in performance and composition.
Barron has performed in various formats, including solo, duo, quartet and quintet but he has maintained a consistent trio with Kiyoshi Kitagawa and Johnathan Blake for the past two decades.
For his 80th birthday celebration, Barron embarked on a project named Kenny Barron with Strings, which featured a 30-piece orchestra.
Born in Philadelphia, a city renowned for producing exceptional musicians, Barron began his career in high school, playing with drummer Philly Joe Jones. At 19, he relocated to New York City and collaborated with several notable musicians, including Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, and James Moody. Dizzy Gillespie hired Barron in 1962, solely based on Moody's endorsement, without hearing him play. Post his five-year association with Dizzy, Barron worked with Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, and Buddy Rich. His improvisation skills were significantly influenced by Yusef Lateef in the early '70s, leading up to his debut album as a leader in 1974.
