Kandace Springs + Artemis

Tue 11 July 2023

Stage time / 7:30pm

Doors / 7:00pm

Location

Barbican,
Silk Street
EC2Y 8DS

World renowned Nashville-based singer, songwriter and pianist Kandace Springs will bring her soul-drenched vocals to the Barbican to perform material from her latest Blue Note album, The Women Who Raised Me. Her most personal work yet, the album is her loving tribute to the great female singers who inspired her to become one of the premier jazz/soul vocalists of our time. As Prince once said, 'Kandace Springs has a voice that could melt snow’.

“My father used to play me records when I was young, and I fell in love right away with all these great singers”, says Springs. “I literally learned to do what I do by singing along with them. Ever since, I’ve wanted to pay that forward by reminding people of how great these ladies are; we all owe them so much.

Kandace Springs will also perform new unreleased material.

“Springs proves again to be one of today’s best voices.”

Glide Magazine

“Citing Nina Simone as her inspiration, Springs evinces a similarly powerful beauty, a satin ‘n sinew verve, though her soul-infused sound more strongly suggests Cassandra Wilson by way of Whitney Houston.”

Opening the evening will be Artemis. The brainchild of pianist and composer Renee Rosnes, Artemis is a powerful ensemble of modern masters made up of Ingrid Jensen (trumpeter), Nicole Glover (tenor saxophonist), Alexa Tarantino (alto saxophonist/flutist), Noriko Ueda (bassist) and Allison Miller (drummer).

This sextet of visionary female bandleaders and composers are distinctive, not only for bringing six singular artists, each renowned for their own remarkable solo careers; but for its multi-generational and multinational line-up producing original to mind-bending arrangements of eclectic material. Artemis will deliver their second album in Spring 2023.

"A killer line-up of players who hail from all over the world...they all converge on this extremely cosmopolitan, sleek, rhythm-forward, modern sound"
