Celebrating the Jazz Clubs
The Guildhall Jazz Festival in association with the EFG London Jazz Festival features current and past students, Guildhall Jazz teachers and special guests in a celebration of the wealth of creativity and originality within the Guildhall Jazz community.
Jan Halen’s one woman violin show entrances audiences with the magic of live looping. Performing original compositions from her two albums as well as unreleased material, Jan Halen’s loops invite you to watch as individual phrases unfold and evolve into an electronic symphony of cinematic atmosphere.
Educated at the Royal Northern College of Music in classical violin performance, and at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in jazz performance, Jan Halen performs original compositions using her loop station and violin, incorporating a variety of effects and techniques to mimic a full band. Ranging between funky basslines, jazz influenced melodies, and atmospheric layering, Jan Halen creates mellifluous and ululating loops in a wide variety of styles, all performed live with no pre-recorded samples.
Jan has performed at numerous festivals as well as other prestigious venues, including Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall (UK) as well as in venues in major European cities; Barcelona, Krakow, San Remo, and Strasbourg. In other musical ventures, Jan has recorded for BBC radio and features on a variety of recorded releases, including several collaborations with Simon Green for Pretty Neat Records. Jan has also had the opportunity to perform as support for such world class musicians as guitarist John Williams and electronic music du o Coldcut , as well as having completed successful tours with her chamber music ensemble The Beech Duo.
Jan’s debut album Zen Goes Wild was featured in Nau Nua art magazine and championed by comedian Chris Hardwick. Jan’s latest album, Nebulae, was released in 2022.
