We’d like to invite friends old and new to our East London space for the first of our annual appointments for the series as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. Big sounds and big ideas will encompass the afternoon with new music for harp, hacked instruments and a hybrid chamber ensemble.
We Are Children (We Make Sound) is a collective of composer-performers which emerged in 2011 from composition classes at London’s ICMP. The group exists as a free spirit, with an ever evolving and revolving membership. The group follows the possibilities that arrive with sound, exploring ideas for collaborative composition using improvisation, structured and unstructured, and process as a collective of performer-composers. For this performance they re-visit older works, recent works, and some recently devised situations.
Leon Michener is a London-born pianist whose work spans recordings of 20th-century classical music through to free jazz. After graduating from Trinity College of Music, he constructed his Klavikon system: a combination of piano, amplification, found objects, feedback, and analogue processing. By augmenting the 88 keys with his own inventions and found objects — including custom-made microphones, toys, vibrators, and large amounts of Blu-Tack — he created a highly distinctive sound world of cascading percussion, sub-bass, and dark abstract textures.
Chris Clarke is a Canadian harpist and multidisciplinary artist, their work spans classical, contemporary, and experimental music. Christopher has premiered new works, including works by Hannah Kendall, Omri Kochavi, Zygmund de Somongyi, and Carla Ng. They made their off-West End debut in Sam Shepard’s Savage/Love and Tongues, co-composing and performing the incidental score, and in 2025 were recognised by CBC Music as one of the year’s foremost emerging classical Canadian artists under the age of 30.
