One of the leading voices in contemporary spiritual jazz, Chip Wickham performs music from his latest album The Eternal Now. Expansive melodies, deep grooves and hypnotic rhythms come together in music inspired by 1960s British jazz, Jazzanova and Nicola Conte.

Saxophonist, flautist and composer Chip Wickham has become one of the leading voices in contemporary spiritual jazz. Originally from Brighton, he first came to prominence in the UK's breakbeat scene, performing with artists including Nightmares On Wax and Graham Massey. At heart, though, Wickham has always been a jazz musician. After appearing on Matthew Halsall's debut album Sending My Love in 2008, he began a long-standing relationship with Gondwana Records that continues today.

Across a series of acclaimed solo albums, Wickham has developed a distinctive sound that draws equally on hard-swinging spiritual jazz, the classic sound of 1960s British jazz and contemporary influences including Jazzanova, The Cinematic Orchestra and Nicola Conte. Whether on flute or tenor saxophone, his music is characterised by soulful melodies, deep grooves and an unmistakable warmth.

His latest release, The Eternal Now, is his most progressive recording to date. Co-produced by Matthew Halsall and drawing inspiration from artists including Lonnie Liston Smith, David Axelrod and Sven Wunder, it sees Wickham push his sound into exciting new territory, blending expansive improvisation with hypnotic rhythms and richly layered textures. Expect an uplifting evening of groove-driven spiritual jazz, performed with the warmth, lyricism and effortless musicality that have made him one of the UK's most distinctive jazz voices.
