To celebrate the centenary of Charles Mingus, we screen Basil Dearden’s stunning London noir, a reworking of Shakespeare’s Othello and snapshot of the local 1960s jazz scene.
Mingus makes an appearance in All Night Long in a small cameo, joining the cast as he happened to be in town performing. The film is set in a warehouse where a party is being thrown by a wealthy music promoter and jazz enthusiastic (Richard Attenborough) and the site becomes an increasingly tense space as Patrick McGoohan attempts to scheme and manipulate through the film, in the Iago-like role.
Mingus, alongside Tubby Hayes, John Dankworth, Dave Brubeck, lend the film an authenticity, as they all perform throughout the film, which creates an intimate, environment, capturing the style and culture of the jazz aficionados of the period, makes this one of the great jazz films.
