Celebrating the Jazz Clubs
The Alan Barnes Quartet—featuring Alan Barnes, David Newton, Andrew Cleyndert, and Joe Edwards—perform a dynamic set of jazz at Highams Park Jazz Club, showcasing their blend of expert musicianship and expressive improvisation.
The Alan Barnes Quartet features multi-reed player Alan Barnes, whose career spans over 45 years as a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, and bandleader. Known for his formidable virtuosity on clarinet, alto and baritone saxophones, Alan blends technical brilliance with expressive musicality and a collaborative spirit. His vast recorded catalogue includes over thirty albums as leader and co-leader, plus work with notable artists such as Charlie Watts, Bryan Ferry, and Jamie Cullum. Alan has toured and recorded with jazz legends including Freddie Hubbard and Stan Tracey, and received over 30 British Jazz Awards, twice named BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.
David Newton, on piano, has been Alan’s musical partner for 47 years. Widely recognised as one of the UK’s finest jazz pianists, Newton’s lyrical and sophisticated playing complements Alan’s expressive style perfectly. Their latest album, ‘Tis Autumn (Woodville Records), has received critical acclaim for its empathic interplay and polished execution.
Andrew Cleyndert on double bass and Joe Edwards on drums complete the quartet. Andrew is known for his swinging bass lines and inventive solos, while Joe brings a driving yet subtle swing and impressive rhythmic creativity.
The band’s repertoire spans from jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Art Pepper, to modern composers such as Chick Corea and Antonio Carlos Jobim, alongside standards from the Great American Songbook. Their performances are characterised by deep empathy, telepathic interplay, and a commitment to swinging, accessible jazz, delivered with warmth, precision, humour and engaging anecdotes.
This group offers audiences an evening of masterful jazz, blending tradition with fresh energy, making every performance a memorable celebration of the music’s rich history and vibrant present.
