Wayne Shorter Quartet and LutosAir Quintet +

LONDON Barbican
Silk Street

The years melt away when this most revered of jazz composer/performers hits the stage with the quartet that has defined his work over the past 15 years - the opportunity to visit the telepathic interaction between pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade following every twist and turn of Wayne Shorter’s serpentine improvisations is amongst the defining experiences in jazz today.

Following a fascinating Barbican excursion with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra earlier this year, delving into a back catalogue of jazz themes that have inhabited the music since a 60s decade recording for Blue Note and playing with Art Blakey and Miles Davis, this is Shorter continuing to demonstrate that the jazz masters never lose the urge to explore the new and unexpected – jazz at the cutting edge.

‘Anthemic, emphatic and triumphant’ (Daily Telegraph)

‘A free-flowing maelstrom of invention, still at the forefront of acoustic jazz’ (Financial Times)

Wayne Shorter has been co-commissioned by Jazztopad Festival in Wrocław, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, Monterey Jazz Festival and  to write a new piece for a 10-piece wind ensemble; the LutosAir Quintet + is composed of soloists from the National Forum of Music Wrocław Philharmonic.

This work will premiere at this year’s Jazztopad Festival before coming to London for this concert.
