Viktoria Mullova: Stradivarius in Rio
LONDON St John’s Downshire Hill
Hampstead Arts Festival
Virtuoso violinist Viktoria Mullovea extends her musical curiosity in jazz interpretations of Brazilian songs from Jobim and Caetano Veloso, with cellist Matthew Barley and guitarist Joao Noguiera Pinto.
Since winning the Gold Medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition and, one year later, dramatically defecting from the USSR, Viktoria Mullova has become one of the elite handful of 'greatest' violinists active today. Her musical curiosity has led her to extensive explorations of jazz, and she has toured with, among others, Julian Joseph. In this concert, Viktoria is joined by Matthew Barley (cello), Paul Clarvis (percussion) and João Luis Nogueira Pinto (guitar) in works by icons of Brazilian popular music, including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Claudio Nucci.
