The Impact of Jazz: Britain in the '20s and '30s: Jazz, Technology and the Media in interwar Britain
LONDON Southbank Centre / Level 5 Function Room
Part of a study day packed with enlightening talks and discussions on the historic impact of Jazz.
Jazz developed hand-in-hand with technology which both enabled its dissemination and influenced its development. Recording is perhaps the most obvious instance of this, but the appearance of jazz in film and on emergent BBC radio were also important in bringing experiences of jazz to a wider domestic listenership. Dr Nicolas Pillai (Birmingham City University), Dr Paul Cuff (Universtiy of Warwick) and Professor Tim Wall (Birmingham City University) explore the impact that jazz had via these new media forms.
