The Boy’s Doin' It – a celebration of the life and music of Hugh Masekela

LONDON Southbank Centre / Royal Festival Hall
Belvedere Road

A celebration of the South African jazz visionary and defiant political voice Hugh Masekela, featuring Sibongile Khumalo, Complete, Selema Masekela and Hugh’s last great touring band.

For 78 years, South Africa was blessed with a phenomenal visionary who impacted African jazz with a unique brass tone and storytelling style. Trumpeter and singer-songwriter Masekela was world renowned for international hits like 'Grazing in the Grass', 'Stimela' and 'Bring Him Back Home', as well as his work on Paul Simon’s Graceland.

Together with the Masekela family, we have put together a complete evening to celebrate his life, featuring his full band of musicians, a top-class brass section and some of South Africa’s greatest singers, all paying their love and respect to the great ‘Bra Hugh’.

‘My biggest obsession is to show Africans and the world who the people of Africa really are.’
(Hugh Masekela 1939 to 2018)

Sadly Oliver Mtukudzi suffered heart failure this week and is in hospital in Harare.   He is stable and recovering, but won’t be able to take part in this concert.  We all wish Oliver a swift and complete recovery.

A needed tribute to the late great pioneer of South African jazz. Led by some of South Africa's best musicians and people who worked closely with 'Bra Hugh' I couldn't think of a more fitting ode to one of jazz's greatest musicians.
