Stubbleman presents an ambient mixture of found sounds, modular synthesizers, live piano, bass, and self-made automats and drones in a cinematic soundscape inspired by his American roadtrip.
Pascal Gabriel's musical career began back in the 70s punk band The Razors, on to the sample heavy S'Express and Bomb the Bass of the 80s, then to writing and producing artists such as Kylie Minogue, Dido, Ladyhawke, Bebel Gilberto and many more. Now Pascal's solo project, Stubbleman, sees a return to his electronic and ambient roots with new album Mountains and Plains, released on Marc Hollander's label Crammed Discs, to critical acclaim.
'His principal instrument is a ghostly piano, over which are layered synths, guitars, glockenspiel and the toys of the sound alchemist’s art. It’s a beautifully crafted work that fits Eno’s definition of ambient being “as ignorable as it is interesting”, at times as minimalist as Steve Reich (such as Badlands Train, a slog across the Texas plain), at others unsettling in its evocation of “purposeless highways and terminally closed diners”, or meditative in its portrait of Taos Twilight'
Complementing his music, Stubbleman also creates filmic visuals denoting movement and travel, a different piece shown with every track to tell a whole, multi-media story. These visuals are mirrored in his album artwork and online aesthetic. Each different dimension of art and engineering are combined in a complete, Stubbleman package.
