Maisha bring a fresh slant to the weighty spiritual jazz tradition. The ensemble, led by Drummer and bandleader Jake Long, released their 2016 debut EP through Jazz Re:freshed, and were part of We Out Here, Brownswood’s 2018 showcase of London’s jazz underground. Since then they have release their debut full length album with Brownswood. Collaborated and recorded with the American legendary saxophonist Gary Bartz. And most recently released there new single ‘Open The Gates’, a 16-minute epic that draws deep rhythmic and musical tangents out of a simple melody and bassline.
Channeling the lineage of spiritual jazz, taking inspiration from Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and Idris Mohammad, the band fuse their jazz influences with West African and Afro-beat rhythms, courtesy of bandleader Jake Long (2016 Yamaha Jazz Scholar) and percussionist Tim Doyle. Twm Dylan keeps the groove alive on double bass with Shirley Tetteh on rhythm and lead guitar, Amané Suganami on keys and the irrepressible force that is Nubya Garcia on sax. They have become leaders on the live circuit making their energetic spiritual live shows something not to be missed.
