Jan Garbarek Group featuring Trilok Gurtu

LONDON Southbank Centre / Royal Festival Hall
Belvedere Road

‘The most original voice in European jazz since Django Reinhardt’ is how composer George Russell described the unmistakable saxophone sound of Jan Garbarek.

Playing his first UK concert with his own group since 2012, and following his extraordinary concerts with the Hilliard Ensemble in 2014, Jan Garbarek returns with his long-established quartet, with the virtuoso percussionist Trilok Gurtu contributing an effervescent groove to the saxophonist’s haunting sonic world, alongside bassist Yuri Daniel and his remarkable keyboard playing partner of some 25 years, Rainer Brünninghaus.

Distilled from a lifetime of listening and playing, from free jazz to the haunting melodies of Nordic folk music, and honed to a intensity that is entirely his own, Garbarek’s music sounds simple and complex at the same time - hymnal and sparse, playful and serious.

Music that communicates with the soul and the spirit, whether live or on his series of landmark recordings for ECM.
