Helena Kay Quartet + Magpie Trio

Wed 17 November 2021

Stage time / 8:30pm

LONDON The Post Bar,
316 High Rd, Tottenham,
N15 4BP

An evening of dynamic and refreshing approaches to the jazz tradition from some of London's most sought after young musicians.

Award winning tenor saxophonist Helena Kay grew up in Perth, Scotland and moved to London to begin studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2016 with a First Class in BMus Jazz (Hons) and receiving the Anjool Malde Jazz Prize for the highest jazz final recital mark that year. In 2015 she won the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, and in 2017 she won the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award which she used to record and release her debut album Moon Palace. Her quartet is made up of long term musical collaborators; Nick Costley-White on guitar, Tom Farmer on Bass and Dave Ingamels on Drums.

“Moon Palace leaves the listener wanting more of Kay’s rich playing… it’s remarkably self-assured and forecasts an imaginative career to come.’ Ammar Kalia, Downbeat

Magpie Trio will be playing music from their debut album (4* Jazzwise) which celebrated the music of Ahmad Jamal as well as music from their upcoming album focusing on the electric era compositions of Wayne Shorter.

“Devoted young originals including drummer Sam Jesson and saxophonist George Crowley … simultaneously cherished where jazz has been, and relished where it might be headed” John Fordham - The Guardian

This evening’s performance will be hosted at Tottenham’s bustling grass roots venue The Post Bar on Tottenham's High Street, 7 min walk from Seven Sisters Station. Expect local craft beer and food from an Argentinian grill.
