Billy Harper Quintet + choir

LONDON Church Of Sound

One of the great Coltrane-influenced tenor saxophonists, Billy Harper tasted greatness early, playing on Gil Evans’ Svengali and making his own first album for the legendary Strata-East label. This concert will bring him together with a London quartet and choir.

The singular Billy Harper will play with an all star London jazz quintet and a choir in the beautiful church of St James The Great.

'Harper’s 1973 album Capra Black (Strata East) remains one of the seminal recordings of jazz’s black consciousness movement - a profoundly spiritual effort that channels both the intellectual complexity of the avant garde as well as the emotional potency of gospel' - Jason Ankeny

A prolific composer and educator, Harper has led his own bands over the years, as well as performed with Gil Evans, Max Roach, Lee Morgan, Charles Tolliver, Randy Weston, the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis big band, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and others.

On this occasion, Billy Harper will be playing with a quintet of some of the best London Jazz musicians as well as a choir. This formation has only happened twice before, in New York and in Szczecin, Poland
