Mwalimu Express brings you the European debut of the Madalitsu Band, a stunning duo from Malawi ...the freshest Roots Music from the Motherland!
Madalitso Band were discovered busking outside a shopping centre in 2009. Their vibrant playing, strong vocals and traditional style caught the attention of producer Emanuel Kamwenje who recorded their first album the same year.
All over Malawi they are revered as musical prophets. The duo come from Mtandire in Lilongwe. Vocalist Yobu Maligwa plays the babatone, a long necked home-made popular Malawian instrument, and Josefe Kalekeni plays the four-string guitar, the traditional Malawi ' banjo ' sound. But Real Roots is what they are....'If they are not playing around town in places like markets, bottle stores and hired in weddings or engagements, they do hired works mainly burning bricks,' Emmanuel told us.
Earlier this year they performed outside Malawi for the first time when they were invited to play two shows at Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar where they brought the whole audience dancing and smiling to their feet .They also caught the attention of Rita Ray who featured them on her Global Beats program on BBC World Service, and invited them to play at this Mwalimu Express London Jazz Festival Session at Rich Mix
