Misha Mullov-Abbado Quintet + Cervantes Quintet

Winner of the 2014 Kenny Wheeler Prize at the Royal Academy of Music, with their debut album coming out on Edition Records in the near future, some of the finest young players in London come together as the Misha Mullov-Abbado Quintet, which performs Misha’s original compositions and arrangements. From chorales and free music to heavy swing and funk, this multi-talented ensemble cites composers as varied as Bach, Brad Mehldau, and Stevie Wonder among their many and varied influences. Other influences include Pat Metheny, Adam Waldmann, Gareth Lockrane and Jasper Høiby, and classical music ranging from Bach and Brahms to Stravinsky and Bartok and more contemporary composers; as well as Earth, Wind And Fire.

Pianist John Cervantes presents his flamenco-inspired quintet, driven by an electrifying rhythm section of cajon, drum kit, palmas and rhythmic feet stomping. The band features a stunning line-up of performers: flautist Gareth Lockrane (Bheki Mseleku, Jack DeJohnette), Cadiz-born percussionist Malick Mbengue (Chano Dominguez, Julian Sanchez), drum kit player Jon Desbruslais (Los Charly’s Orchestra, Buddy Greco), and double bass player Sandy Suchodolski (Quentin Collins, Renato D'Aiello). Cervantes Quintet performs jazz compositions recently recorded for their upcoming debut album, fusing fiery flamenco grooves with impassioned melodies and adventurous improvisation.
