Art Themen's New Directions Quintet
LONDON Bull's Head Barnes
373 Lonsdale Rd
A much-loved figure on the UK scene since the early 60s, saxophonist Themen, with pianist Gareth Williams and trumpeter Steve Fishwick, plays hidden gems from the jazz greats.
Art formed this new band to showcase some of jazz's lesser known gems from composers such as Thelonius Monk, bringing a fresh musicality to material that you wouldn't normally hear. Along with Art, the stellar line-up features pianist Gareth Williams, trumpeter Steve Fishwick, bassist Arnie Somogyi & drummer Winston Clifford.
'A collective that might stand comparison with any in the wider world of jazz' says Peter Vacher of The Guardian. New Directions reflects a desire for a fresh, though accessible examination of this music and the additional firepower of compositions by Messrs Williams, Somogyi and Fishwick add further variety to the repertoire.
Art Themen, a huge figure on the British jazz scene since the early 60's and previous winner in the tenor sax category of the British Jazz Awards, has continued to work at the highest level both in the UK and on the International stage, from touring the world fronting Stan Tracey's quartet for 20 years to featuring with most of the UK jazz scene as well as playing alongside American legends such as Philly Joe Jones, George Coleman, Al Haig, Charlie Rouse, Bud Shank, Nat Adderley & Arturo Sandoval among many others.
'One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians' (Observer), Art's desire to bring a fresh examination of some of the music that he loves to play is brilliantly encapsulated in these shows.
