Alice Zawadzki + Nick Smart/Stan Sulzmann
LONDON 606 Club
90 Lots Rd
Although still in her twenties Alice Zawadzki has already developed into a stunning musician in the vanguard of the post-modern contemporary jazz scene, with a list of accomplishments that is long and impressive. First introduced to jazz at twelve years of age Alice earned a BMus (hons) in violin before graduating with an MA in jazz voice and composition from the Royal Academy. Along the way, she's been the recipient of scholarships from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, the Jerwood Foundation and Scottish Arts Council and has just been selected to participate in jazz promoter Serious' Take Five Edition X artist development programme. Her songs are self-described as about “mischief, whimsy, magic, inebriation, loss, exodus, prejudice and above all, love, while her sound is earthy, organic and satisfying. A breakthrough artist of the highest calibre.
'She is a genuine original with a pure, pealing voice' (Guardian)
'… beautiful – a real force to be reckoned with' (Jamie Cullum)
The second of our "French" influenced gigs features two great UK players collaborating with two of France's finest. Trumpeter Nick Smart includes work with the BBC Big Band and James Taylor Quartet on an extensive CV. He is also the highly respected Head of Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, for which he recently received the prestigious Parliamentary Award for Jazz Education.
Saxophonist Stan Sulzmann's CV reads like a who's who of jazz including work with the likes of Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and Gil Evans and is a brilliant saxophonist with an instantly recognisable sound. Benoit Sourisse came to prominence with violinist Didier Lockwood and includes work with the likes of Philip Catherine and Toots Thielemans. He taught at the National Conservatory of Music of Lyon and is currently Head of Piano at the Didier Lockwood Music Centre. Andre Charlier includes work with Didier Lockwood and has a highly regarded duo with his good friend Benoit Sourisse.
‘This violinist and vocalist played a session for me early in the year. Her talent and originality gave us a unique experience in the studio. A must-see live.’ (Nigel Williams, Jazz FM)
